Unai’s Gravel Trans Jura

18. May 2026
Fancy an adventurous spring? Take the plunge and sign up for the Gravel Trans Jura—you won’t regret it. In our “Gravel Trans Jura Stories” series, past participants share their experiences from this unique journey. Today, Unai (31), a Spaniard living in Zurich and the 2021 U23 national champion in MTB marathon, tells his very own story.
Unai, how long have you been riding a gravel bike and what fascinates you about gravel riding?
3 years. I love the freedom it gives you. I have a road cycling background and I just love being able to ride in all kind of terrains (if technique and gear allows of course)
What made you decide to sign up for the Gravel Trans Jura?

I was looking for a challenge nearby, but without the competitive factor. Since I live in Zurich it was a perfect match. Even though I didn’t want to take it competitively I ended up putting myself a target time of 2 days, which was stressful, but totally worth it.

How did you prepare for it?

I compete all over the year, starting the pre season in November, so even though I didn’t train specifically for it, I was already in shape coming from Zuri Escape 2 weeks before.

Who was with you at the start?

I was on my own and I didn’t know anyone at the start. That’s one of the things I enjoy the most, going into the unknown and getting to know new people on the way.

If you had to choose one moment/place from your Gravel Trans Jura, which one…

… moved you the most emotionally?

Arriving to Nyon after all the ups and downs shortly before 8pm.

… pushed you to your physical limits?

Easy one, last climb to la Barilette.

… still makes you laugh, even when you think about it today?

The moment I broke the spoke on my rear wheel with still 60km to go. It’s absurd how stressed I got.

… impressed you most in terms of scenery?

The climb and weather at the top of Chasseral.

… touched you the most in terms of interpersonal relationships?

Being in touch with people from all different backgrounds, ages, goals. Very nice community.

What advice would you give to someone participating in the GTJ for the first time in 2026?

Take it easy and do not push too hard. The track is as beautiful as hard, don’t over estimate your pace and enjoy the scenery. Important, if rainy don’t be like me, and put some thick knobby tires!
